Therapeutic Touch This healing modality is a modern culmination of several ancient healing practices. It began in the early 1970's when it was developed by Dolores Krieger, PhD, RN, who was at the time a Professor at New York University; and Dora Van Gelder Kunz who is a natural healer. Therapeutic Touch grew up within the nursing profession; it is used in various hospital settings, and it is taught in over 80 colleges and universities, in over 72 countries. There have also been numerous doctoral dissertations done on Therapeutic Touch. Although this is a controversial healing modality, touch, in and of itself, is an expression that can convey caring, warmth, and love, which can have a positive affect on the patient. This non-invasive healing modality is based on the premise that there are energy fields within, surrounding, and connecting each living being. Proponents of Therapeutic Touch believe that it is due to this interconnectedness that a practitioner is able to affect the health of another as this therapy uses an exchange of energy for healing. It is further believed that it is the blockage of this energy that causes illness and disease.
