FOOT  REFLEXOLOGY

Foot reflexology has been around for a long time.  It is even reported that "foot" charts have been found on the walls of Egyptian pyramids.  Although there has been little scientific research into the possible health benefits of this modality, there are many practitioners who will attest to its beneficial use.

Because there are over 7,000 nerves in each foot, foot reflexology proponents claim that neural pathways that connect to the brain can be stimulated in this area to trigger the body's natural healing response. These pathways are stimulated by the practitioner using his thumb and fingers to apply pressure to the "reflex" areas. Each of these reflex areas are believed to correspond to a different organ and/or gland of the body.

Some practitioners say that the focus of foot reflexology is to "re-educate" the "nerve instruction" via the reflex/neural/electrical systems of the body and thereby cause the body to correct itself.  They profess that it is the nerves that instruct the body and therefore if the nerves improve, the instruction will improve, and the end result is that the body itself will improve.

Whether or not the principles of foot reflexology will ever hold credence in the scientific medical community, one of the undisputable effects is that of relaxation.  Foot reflexology is relaxing.  Relaxation causes the breathing to slow, the mind slows, circulation is improved; and this all leads to a more conducive atmosphere for meditation upon the Supreme Lord.
