HERBALS

Herbs have been used by all cultures throughout history for their medicinal effects.  Written documentation of herbal use dates back over 5,000 years to ancient India, China and Egypt.  It was Hippocrates, the Greek physician known as "the Father of medicine"; and Galen, a Roman doctor, who outlined the standards for using herbal medicines which were followed for centuries. Although about 75 percent of allopathic medicines are derived from plants, perceptions, today, are that herbals are a quite separate healing modality.

Herbals aim to treat the whole person, not just the symptoms, and to strengthen the body's own healing abilities.

Herbal medicines are used in several ways including:

  • Internally as:
    • tablets
    • teas
    • tinctures
  • Externally as:
    • compresses
    • poultices
    • salves

Medicinal plants have various healing actions including:

  • analgesic
  • antispasmodic
  • antibacterial
  • astringent
  • antiseptic
  • anti-inflammatory
  • expectorant
  • diuretic
  • sedative
  • digestive

Herbs also:
  • stimulate immunity
  • remove toxins from the blood
