VATA:
- Energy of movement
- Associated with Air and Ether
- Most prominent in the fall and
changes of seasons
- Related to prana (vital life
force), or in the Orient, ch'i
- Controls breathing, muscle and tissue
movement, blinking, and movements in the cells and their membranes
Vata in Balance:
- Associated with creativity and
flexibility
Vata out of Balance:
- Produces fear and anxiety
Vata Individual:
- Small frame, light muscles, and
little fat
- May be underweight
- Dry skin
- Poor circulation leading to cold
hands and feet
- Prone to constipation
- Hair tends to be dry and brittle
- Poor appetite
- Prone to insomnia
Foods Beneficial for the Vata
Individual:
- Best to eat three to four small meals
a day
- Warm, well cooked foods
- One-pot meals; soups, stews,
casseroles
- May use more oil in cooking than
other two doshas
- Sweet, ripe and juicy fruits
- Well cooked rice and oats: cooked
with lots of water, butter or ghee
- Dairy products for protein
- Sparingly legumes, use the split type
and soak overnight before cooking
- Nuts and seeds; best if used as
butters or milks
Foods for the Vata Individual to Avoid:
- Raw foods. May be eaten very
sparingly
- Nightshades; tomatoes, potatoes,
eggplants and peppers
- Spinach
- Drying fruits; cranberries,
pomegranates, raw apples
- Legumes
- Sugar

hair loss

- Strong appetite, strong metabolism,
and strong digestion
- Hearty eaters
- Sleep is moderate but sound
- Prone to fevers, ulceration, colitis,
sore throats, hives and rashes, burning eyes, and inflammatory diseases
- Intelligent
- Great concentration and comprehension
- Sharp memories
- Orderliness is important; good
planners
Foods Beneficial for the Pitta
Individual:
- Incorporate sweet, cooling and bitter
foods
- Barley, rice, oats and wheat
- Vegetables; except tomatoes,
radishes, and chilies
- Salads and raw vegetables
- Sweet fruits
- Most legumes
- Coconut
- Sunflower and pumpkin seeds used
sparingly
- Sweet dairy products; milk, butter,
ghee, unsalted soft cheeses
Foods for the Pitta Individual to Avoid:
- Sour, salty and pungent foods
- Tomatoes, radishes, chilies, garlic,
and raw onions
- Sour fruits
- Most nuts and seeds
- Hot spices
