Ayurvedic Tridoshas

VATA:
  • Energy of movement
  • Associated with Air and Ether
  • Most prominent in the fall and changes of seasons
  • Related to prana (vital life force), or in the Orient, ch'i
  • Controls breathing, muscle and tissue movement, blinking, and movements in the cells and their membranes

 

Vata in Balance:

  • Associated with creativity and flexibility

 

Vata out of Balance:

  • Produces fear and anxiety

 

Vata Individual:

  • Small frame, light muscles, and little fat
  • May be underweight
  • Dry skin
  • Poor circulation leading to cold hands and feet
  • Prone to constipation
  • Hair tends to be dry and brittle
  • Poor appetite
  • Prone to insomnia

 

Foods Beneficial for the Vata Individual:

  • Best to eat three to four small meals a day
  • Warm, well cooked foods
  • One-pot meals; soups, stews, casseroles
  • May use more oil in cooking than other two doshas
  • Sweet, ripe and juicy fruits
  • Well cooked rice and oats: cooked with lots of water, butter or ghee
  • Dairy products for protein
  • Sparingly legumes, use the split type and soak overnight before cooking
  • Nuts and seeds; best if used as butters or milks

 

Foods for the Vata Individual to Avoid:

  • Raw foods. May be eaten very sparingly
  • Nightshades; tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants and peppers
  • Spinach
  • Drying fruits; cranberries, pomegranates, raw apples
  • Legumes
  • Sugar

  • Keep warm
  • Keep calm
  • Avoid raw foods
  • Avoid extreme cold temperatures
  • Eat warm foods and spices
  • Keep a regular routine

PITTA:

  • Energy of the metabolic and digestive system
  • Made of Fire and Water
  • Controls digestions, absorption, nutrition, and body temperature

 

Pitta in Balance:

  • Associated with understanding and intelligence

 

Pitta out of Balance:

  • Produces anger, hatred and jealousy

 

Pitta Individual:

  • Medium frame, moderate muscle development; usually steady in weight
  • Bright eyes; may be green bray or copper brown
  • Silky hair; often early graying or hair loss
  • Moles and freckles are common
  • Skin oily and warm
  • Warmer body temperature
  • Strong appetite, strong metabolism, and strong digestion
  • Hearty eaters
  • Sleep is moderate but sound
  • Prone to fevers, ulceration, colitis, sore throats, hives and rashes, burning eyes, and inflammatory diseases
  • Intelligent
  • Great concentration and comprehension
  • Sharp memories
  • Orderliness is important; good planners

 

Foods Beneficial for the Pitta Individual:

  • Incorporate sweet, cooling and bitter foods
  • Barley, rice, oats and wheat
  • Vegetables; except tomatoes, radishes, and chilies
  • Salads and raw vegetables
  • Sweet fruits
  • Most legumes
  • Coconut
  • Sunflower and pumpkin seeds used sparingly
  • Sweet dairy products; milk, butter, ghee, unsalted soft cheeses

 

Foods for the Pitta Individual to Avoid:

  • Sour, salty and pungent foods
  • Tomatoes, radishes, chilies, garlic, and raw onions
  • Sour fruits
  • Most nuts and seeds
  • Hot spices

  • Avoid excessive heat
  • Eat cooling, non-spicy foods
  • Avoid excessive oil
  • Exercise during the cooler part of the day
  • Avoid excessive steam
  • Limit salt intake

KAPHA:

  • Energy of lubrication

  • Supplies fluid and lubrication for all the bodily parts and systems

 

Kapha in Balance:

  • Expressed as forgiveness, love and calmness

 

Kapha out of Balance:

  • Attachment, greed and envy

 

Kapha Individual:

  • Strength, stamina, and endurance

  • Stable and grounded

  • Sweet dispositions

  • Large and attractive eyes

  • Great long term memory, though slow to comprehend

  • Long and sound sleep pattern

  • Peaceful, caring, tolerant, compassionate, and forgiving

  • Deep spiritual faith

  • Prone to excessive weight gain

  • Prone to water principle physical problems; colds, flu, and bronchial congestion

 

Foods Beneficial for the Kapha Individual:

  • Bitter, astringent and pungent foods

  • Best grains are buckwheat and millet; also may take barley, rice and corn

  • All vegetables; especially green leafy ones

  • Astringent, drying fruits; pears, peaches, mangoes, apples and cranberries

  • Small quantity of legumes; the best being red lentils, black beans, mung beans and pinto beans

  • Occasional sunflower and pumpkin seeds

  • All spices

  • Only sweetener should be raw honey

 

Foods for the Kapha Individual to Avoid:

  • Dairy products

  • Fats

  • Abundant grains

  • Sweet, sour or juicy vegetables

  • Sweet or sour fruits

  • Abundant legumes

  • Most nuts and seeds

  • Get plenty of exercise

  • Avoid heavy foods

  • Keep active

  • Avoid dairy foods

  • Avoid iced food and drinks

  • Eat light, dry food

  • Avoid fatty or oily foods
